We have secured a piece of land on Andros Island in The Bahamas and are ready to start our journey of building a Shark Research station!
IN THE BEGINNING - February 2018
Fast forward a few months to July when Annie and Tristan both arrive on Andros, this time to explore the island together with new and old friends. The group explored everything from the shallow sand flats to the depths of the Tongue of the Ocean (TOTO) and were rewarded with some unforgettable moments and experiences including a dive with silky sharks. The Saving the Blue logo was designed based on a photo Annie took that day. The couple stood together on the same dock Tristan had seen for the first time just a few months before, imagining what could be and visualizing the incredible possibilities.
Tristan visited Andros in February 2018 and was beyond excited by what the island had to offer. Thick mangroves, mysterious blue holes, one of the largest fringing reefs in the world, silky sharks, Caribbean reef sharks, tiger sharks, great hammerheads and so much more. He was completely taken with Andros and immediately called his wife Annie to express his excitement about what he’d discovered. Whilst on the island, Tristan had stumbled upon a property just next door to his accommodation and found himself fantasizing about transforming it into a shark research station. He sent Annie endless photos and videos, including one of him standing on a run-down dock stating, ‘We should build a research station here!’.

FENCING - April 2026
The property started heavily overgrown with no clear set boundary. The fence on some sides of the property is bursting with bush, some sections have fallen down and some areas have no fence at all. This phase of the project will see us link property markers and create a clear and important property boundary. This project will be led by our cherished team member and Bahamian local, Sorantaa. Rontaa will continue to lead a team of three Bahamians towards this goal. We hope you will donate to support us, and the local economy.
BUILDING RENOVATION - Summer 2026
Our current goal is to renovate the only habitable concrete building on the property. Old materials will need to be removed carefully and safely, with any salvageable materials kept for reuse/up-cycling after which the full renovation will begin. As before, all local and skilled Bahamians will work on the building. We expect this phase to be completed sometime between May and August. This work, like the bush clearing, will be physically demanding, and we hope you will continue to support us on this journey by donating to this phase.
DOCK PROJECT - November 2026
Although already funded, we would like to share our plans to renovate the current dockage. We will repair and modernize the existing heavily damaged dock. It is unsafe, and as it will be a critical part of our everyday life, fully restoring it is a must. This exciting project will go on to be a focal point for our work, as we’ll leave and return from this dock almost daily. We must thank and remember the late Bonnie and David Epstein for funding this project. They funded this phase back in 2021 and we will always appreciate and remember their belief and trust in our work. You are both so incredibly missed.
