Monsters under the bridge

Description

During the course of the special, shark ecologist and Saving the Blue Vice President and Lead Scientist Dr Tristan Guttridge joined forces with PhD student Laura McDonnell, and University of Miami Professor of Marine Biology Dr Neil Hammerschlag to investigate whether local folklore about a giant hammerhead called Big Moe could be a sign of a new species of shark. Their investigations reveal many things about the beautiful ecosystem growing around the pylons of the Seven Mile Bridge in Florida Keys, USA.

Early Findings

The genetic samples collected during the show indicated that great hammerheads have finer scale stock structure (i.e., genetic differentiation) across their range from the Gulf of Mexico to the western North Atlantic. Female great hammerheads likely drive this genetic diversity due to their propensity to return to their region of birth for pupping. Further tracking studies will be needed to confirm and explore this finding further, in addition to tissue samples from juvenile and young of the year great hammerheads.

Special Thanks

Gratitude must go to Mike Hudson, not only was he the wonderful medic on the show, but also the mastermind behind the original concept for Monsters under the Bridge. Additional thanks to Mark Rackley and Fo Zayed the videographers from Hazmat Productions (photo credits for the below imagery) and lastly the incredible producers Paul Matusheski and Ben Haslup.
