About this shark

This shark was caught in Andros, The Bahamas, and is the beautiful animal in the images featured.

About this Adoption

This shark is female, measures a stretch total length of ~140cm, and was fitted with both a PIT and acoustic tag.

The acoustic tag has been implanted into the body cavity of the shark and each time it passes within 1500ft (500m) of a receiver (a listening device) it will ‘talk’ to it, sending an ID code, time and date stamp. These acoustic tags have a battery life of ~10 years and through our receiver array, and other scientists in the Bahamas and US we monitor the movement and habitat use of a mixture of animals, including sharks.

A PIT tag does not transmit signals, but is scanned by researchers during a recapture, just like the tags used in pets.

We’ll only get further information on this shark if we or other scientists catch it again, or it swims within range of a receiver.

In exchange for this adoption donation, you will have the privilege of naming her, you will receive an adoption certificate, and if we recapture or detect your shark, we will excitedly be in touch with an update!

General Information

We work with silkies from as small as 80cm juveniles all the way through to adults exceeding 350cm. If you would like to adopt a curious, bold, and seemingly fearless shark, silkies are the ones for you! These pelagic sharks have been consistently recorded as the second highest traded shark in global fisheries, and with so little known about them in the northwest Atlantic, you can play a part in our research efforts to help them.

On adoption we’ll provide rough information on your shark’s location/s, however we will not be able to share exact data or location points.

** Your adoption certificate will be sent as a PDF to your email address **
